January

This year, I have had a sudden and startling revelation. I love January. Love it! I know I should be pining for the festive season, just gone, but actually I'm watching all the DVDs we got as gifts, drinking the leftover Christmas wine and generally having a much, much better time than I did last month. This time of year is really great, I think, and it gets a bad press. I'm going to do my bit to set the record straight and share with you all the top ten reasons (off the top of my head) that January beats the pants off December.

 First, and most obviously:

And a close second:

On a not-at-all-unrelated note:

Don't say I'm not the only one. And since the main reason to go to parties is food anyway:

And speaking of food - well, the need to eat less of it, and be more organised, and a nicer person and comb the cat more frequently:

But for me, I guess it's mostly, really, about time. I had to buy twenty six presents for family BEFORE I got anything for Jay and the kids. It makes me hyperventilate. So:

And speaking of time, why is the busiest time of year also the most wet, windy and foul?

And even if you could stay home in December, it's a dangerous proposition. After all:

Whereas being home in January is wonderful - it's the season of freshly unwrapped DVD box-sets. Which is why:

And of course, the very best reason of all why January beats the pants off December:

And that, my friends, is why JANUARY WINS.

Happy New Year, everyone! May we all have a wonderful 2013.

  2. If only I'd read this half an hour ago I could have saved myself the pain of winterly fortnightly epilation - I didn't realise January was a never-shave-legs month! Fantastic! I'll stop apologising to my hubby and explain that in fact it's a widely accepted January rule & cosy on the couch with DVD boxset & chocolates! :)

  3. Of all the important posts I have ever read on your blog....the posts that taught me why privacy is worth it... the posts that helped me understand attachment...the posts that helped me understand fertility issues... out of all of them - this might be my favorite. I used to hate January. What was I thinking??

  4. Ok, what's your issue with Elf? I mean, yeah it badly represents adoption. But dude! Will Ferrell is freaggin hilarious!!
    I just gotta know.

    1. Sherry, I've gotta admit.... my thing against Elf is 99% Zooey Deschanel and 1% that annoying little kid.

  5. Oh I love Elf (and our local adoption support services nonprofit lists it as their favorite adoption movie!) and have always hated January. Like semiferalmama says, What was I thinking? Nice perspective. My birthday falls in the middle of December craziness, so we switched it this year to January. I'm looking forward to that. Thanks for the perspective.

  6. I love your comparison! I LOVE January, then again it's summer, beautiful blue skies, warm weather make drinking water and exercising so much more palatable and HOLIDAYS at the beach.

    Don't you miss Australia?

My UK friends tell me Feb is actually the worse month of the year - it seems like it's grey all the time and depressing. My one set of friends books a holiday in a hot region in Feb to get away from it all :)

  7. Oh my goodness-twenty six presents?? I think it's time for your family to draw names :)

And I love January too, but I SUPER LOVE December!
And with that, I'm off to start organizing all of my closets, wish me luck.

    1. believe it or not, that is with one half of the family already drawing names. Now I'm working on the other half to do the same.

    2. For real? That's madness!

Maybe buy family presents - movie night basket - DVD plus some snacks - that kind of thing

  8. My secret for not shaving my legs in December is thick legwear. Add tall boots, and it's even better.

I hate this January. Forever. But I think I'll probably like next January.

    1. Mary, I think you are allowed to hate this January. But it's just going to get better and better from February, right?

  9. You are so right by January. But what you said about Elf is deeply concerning.

    1. Yep, I think Claudia needs an Elf intervention. Let's do this!

  10. Well, I sure am intrigued by your perspective on January. This month always makes me feel so 'blehh', but you're right about a lot of it. I just went bananas at the Body Shop after-Christmas sale and have been dousing myself in half-price smelly stuff like crazy. I do like how low expectation are for this month after so much hullaballo the previous month. As for the hairy legs, can I also stop feeling guilty about keeping my 'lady quarters' shaved/trimmed or whatever this month (and, like, always), too?

Anyways, happy new year to you!!!
